Obituary

We remember with gratitude the life of Sister Sandra (Sandy) Price who was a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur for 65 years. She died peacefully at Highland Hospital in Oakland, CA, at the age of 83.

Sandy entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1960 after graduating from Notre Dame High School, Belmont, CA. A talented elementary and pre-school teacher, she served in schools in Alameda, Belmont, and San Jose. After receiving a BA in Spanish from College of Notre Dame in Belmont and an MA in Montessori Education from Xavier University in Dayton, OH, in 1969 she began new ministries as a pastoral program organizer at Centro Pastoral in San Jose and as Director of the Preschool to Teen Program for Economically Disadvantaged Youth in San Jose.

In 1980, she traveled to El Salvador on a fact-finding mission for the Social Justice Committee of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, was detained and questioned there, and released through the efforts of the US State Department. Undaunted, the next year she welcomed a mission assignment to Nicaragua, and over the course of the next forty years, helped build 64 one-room schools and 18 separate pre-schools as well as many footbridges over rivers so children could get to school. She worked with indigenous Sisters even as war broke out, and, as she said, "you got up in the morning, you didn't know if you were going to get to the end of the day."

Reluctantly returning to California in 2023 due to the increasing political challenges in Nicaragua and her own declining health, she moved to Mercy Care and Retirement Center in Oakland, where, with a "heart as wide as the world", she continued her outreach to others, took up gardening, and enjoyed reconnecting with family.

Daughter of James and Helen Price (deceased), she is lovingly remembered by her sister Barbara Johnson and brother in law, David Johnson, three nieces and nephew, Shaun Gray, Beth Hart, Karen Lechner, Joe Johnson, friends, former students, and Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Sister Sandy at 11:00 am on Wednesday, November 12 in the Chapel at the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Province Center, 1520 Ralston Avenue, in Belmont, California. The burial will be held at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery at 2:30 pm on Wednesday, November 12.
