The Obituary of
Robert "OPA" Ullrich
7/21/1928-12/02/2024

Robert Ullrich was born on July 21, 1928, in Oakland, California, to Maxmilian Ullrich and Mary Stolz, who were in the United States on a work visa. When Robert was just three or four years old, the family returned to Cologne Germany, where he spent his formative years. The impact of dual citizenship was profound in his life, especially during his military service. At just 16, Robert was drafted into the German Army during World War II. At the age 20, he chose to return to the United States. He was drafted into the Navy for the Korean War, where he dedicated another four years of service before being honorably discharged.

At just 14, Robert found his love for carpentry, a talent that would stay with him for a lifetime. He developed his skills to become not only a proficient carpenter but also a self-taught architect, making a significant impact through the creative projects he built on the Stanford Hospital grounds, where he devoted three decades of his professional life. His skillful craftsmanship was evident in his family life as well, highlighted by two operational water wheels he constructed. One of these remarkable creations proudly stands near his family's residence in Redwood City, while the other graces the serene countryside of their charming home in Guerneville.

Robert, affectionately known as Opa, was a remarkable man whose life was deeply connected to his beloved wife of 60 years, Irmgard, who passed away in late 2019. Together, they were a source of warmth and kindness, leaving an indelible impact on everyone they encountered, especially his sons Robert Paul Ullrich, Robert Kurt Ullrich (wife Kim), granddaughter Shannon Beckwith (husband Lyle), great-grandsons Liam and Kaison Beckwith and niece, Linda Carter.

Even at the age of 96, while facing health challenges, Robert stayed dedicated to his craft, completing various projects like wood benches, woodsheds, and roofing work.

OPA, you will be deeply missed, and your legacy will be forever cherished.
