Robert Maldonado, 89, died at Brookside Skilled Nursing, San Mateo, California, on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, after a brief illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday September 11, 2025 at 11 a.m. at Saint Charles Catholic Church in San Carlos. Interment immediately after at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, 490 Lincoln Street, Santa Clara.
Robert was born to Pedro and Maria Luisa Maldonado on July 17, 1936, in Ponce, Puerto Rico. In 1944, he and his family moved to New York City to be near their relatives. As a design electrical engineer, Robert authored and was awarded several patents related to reducing x-ray exposure amounts to dental patients. Robert was a member of the local Elks Club, the San Carlos Tennis Club, and continued to swim. He loved to travel and made numerous trips to Puerto Rico, the East Coast and Europe. Robert also enjoyed socializing via his morning coffees, meals at the Elks and his Spanish speaking group.
He is survived by his nieces and nephew Anne (Greg) Carlson, Johnston, Iowa; Mary (Matthew) Mills, Anchorage, Alaska; and Peter (Terry) Maldonado, Gallatin, Tennessee; grand-nephews, grand-niece and great-grand-nephews; and his special friend Barbara Marre, San Francisco. Robert will also be missed by many friends with whom he enjoyed coffee, dining out, volunteering, and playing tennis. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Peter, his sister-in-law Theresa and one brother who died in infancy.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area (www.bbbsba.org ), 1230 Preservation Park Way, Oakland, CA. 94612. For many years Robert served as a mentor to many bay area youth.
