Obituary

Richard "Rich" Andrew Ferrari passed away peacefully at his home in Redwood City on February 17, 2026, at the age of 86.

He is survived by his loving wife, Donna; his son, Chris Ferrari (Kerry); his daughter, Natalie Corso (Rick); his stepson, Scott Hill (Kate); and his stepdaughter, Karin Hill Appleton (Zac). He was also blessed with four grandchildren whom he adored: Samantha O'Connor (Thomas), Justin Corso, Nathan Ferrari, and Eliza Appleton.

Rich was born on November 10, 1939, in San Mateo, California, to Antone and Annie Ferrari. He grew up in San Mateo alongside his siblings, Renaldo and Dorothy. Rich attended St. Matthew's Catholic School before graduating from Junípero Serra High School in 1958.

Rich followed in his father's footsteps into the waste management industry. He began his career "packing the can" for San Mateo County Scavengers. When BFI took over, he continued on, driving debris trucks and later working in dispatch. During his time at BFI, he formed friendships that lasted a lifetime; friendships he often referred to as his second family. They shared countless memories and regularly gathered to reminisce about the good times throughout the years, right up until his passing. After 45 dedicated years in waste management, Rich retired from Allied Waste in 2004, always holding his career and colleagues in the highest regard.

Rich loved sports - baseball, softball, football, waterskiing, and bowling. As a young man, he played baseball, and later as an adult, he played softball for many years in San Carlos and Redwood City. He cherished being on the diamond with friends and was especially proud to play alongside his son Chris and his son-in-law Rick. He found great joy not only in the games themselves but also in the camaraderie shared with teammates afterward.

One of Rich's greatest passions was coaching baseball alongside his brother, Ren. Together, they coached the Colts for 17 years in San Carlos Little League and later he coached San Carlos Babe Ruth Basebase for seven years. He also coached his daughter in Peppermint Patty Softball in Redwood City and, 40 years later, returned to the field to coach his granddaughter in Redwood City Girls Softball.

As a young man, Rich enjoyed working on muscle cars and had several classics. Of all his vehicles, he was most proud of his 1971 El Camino, which he purchased at Hot August Nights in Reno, Nevada. Rich and Donna spent many wonderful years bringing the truck to local car shows with friends and family, enjoying weekends in Santa Cruz for Hot Rods on the Beach and cruising along the coast.

Rich and Donna were married for 38 years. One of their favorite pastimes was embarking on cruise-ship vacations with family and friends, visiting many different countries together. They also enjoyed their annual trips to Lake Tahoe and a memorable road trip to Yellowstone National Park with friends. However, their happiest times were always spent with family. Whether cheering at games, attending recitals and plays, or simply sitting around the table together, these were the moments that mattered most to Rich.

A funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel located at 300 Fulton St., Redwood City on Saturday, May 9th at 12PM. A celebration of life reception will be held at the Ferrari family home following the mass.
