Raymond Rock
Hanley
November 23, 1932 – December 12, 2023
Raymond Rock Hanley "Ray" died peacefully at home on December 12, 2023, at the age of ninety-one. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones after suffering a major stroke a few days prior.
Born and raised in San Francisco, Ray was the first of four children born to Honora and Raymond Hanley. Ray attended St. Paul's Elementary and St. James High School and was a member of the first graduating class of Riordan High School in 1950. Ray was drafted into the Korean War in February 1953. He served in the U.S. Army stationed in Trieste, Italy, and returned home to San Francisco in December 1954.
Ray became the Director of Tennis at Golden Gate Park Tennis Courts in his late twenties. Here, he met the love of his life, Margaret, who had come to San Francisco from a small town in Wales, Great Britain. After a two-year courtship, they married on August 7, 1965, and settled in San Carlos, where they raised their two daughters and resided for the rest of their lives.
Ray earned his B.A. from San Francisco State University and began his career as a teacher with the Burlingame School District. Ray taught for 35 years, primarily math, at Burlingame Intermediate School where he was a popular and beloved teacher.
Ray was a family man. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, daughters, and extended family. Large holiday gatherings were greatly cherished. Ray loved to travel and spent vacations in Wales, Hawaii, and Yosemite, and always had a video camera in hand to capture the scene. Once retired, he enjoyed extensive travels with his loving wife to Europe, National Parks, Australia, and New Zealand.
Ray had a lifelong passion for athletics and sports. He was a high school basketball and baseball player and later an avid tennis player. He had season tickets to the San Francisco 49ers for forty years, beginning with the team at Kezar Stadium. Once he retired, he developed a passion for golf. A weekly tee time with his brother-in-laws and lifelong friend brought him immense joy.
Ray is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret Hanley; their daughters, Jennifer Salma (Riyad) and Melinda McClure; sisters Pat Davey (Bernie) and Kathleen McCann (Dave); sister-in-law Virginia Hanley; grandsons Evan and Cameron McClure and Mason and Rhys Salma; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in death by his loving parents, Honora and Raymond Hanley, and his younger brother, James Hanley.
A funeral Mass will be held Friday, January 5, at 10:30 am at St.Charles Catholic Church in San Carlos. A luncheon will follow the Mass at St. Charles.
