Phillip R. McGowan, 84, of Redwood City, California, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2024, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Phil will be remembered for his kindness, quick wit, and the warmth he brought to those around him.
Phil was born on August 7, 1940, to Thelma and Ernest McGowan in Kansas. He pursued his higher education at the University of Wyoming, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1962. He then went on to complete his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1964.
Phil's career began at General Dynamics/Convair in San Diego, where he worked as an Analyst in the Astronautics Division. His work was pivotal in both astronautics and military fields, marking the start of a 42-year-long career in computer engineering. He was known for his dedication and expertise, contributing to advancements that spanned both civil and defense sectors.
In 1974, Phil married the love of his life, Betty C. Whitten. Together, they adopted their daughter, Elizabeth McGowan.
Phil retired in 2006 and embraced his hobbies with great passion. He enjoyed camping, traveling in his trailer, and found creative joy in working with leather, crafting custom pieces with care and precision. He also remained active in his local community, sharing his time and talents with those around him.
Phil was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, and his sister, Janice. He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth, who carries forward his legacy of warmth, humor, and kindness.
A Celebration of Life will be held on October 19, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Crippen & Flynn Woodside Chapel, 400 Woodside Road, Redwood City, CA 94061.
