Obituary

John Wells, a lifelong resident of San Mateo County, passed away peacefully at home in Redwood City on January 8, 2026. He was 81 years old.

John was born on September 7, 1944, in San Mateo, California, to Margaret Mary Glennan and John Albert Wells, Sr., both of whom preceded him in death. Except for his time in military service, John spent his entire life in San Mateo County, a place he was proud to call home.

John dedicated 35 years of distinguished service to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. He began his career in 1966 before being drafted into the United States Army in 1967. From 1967 to 1969, he served as a U.S. Army Criminal Investigator, initially stationed at the San Francisco Presidio and later in Naha, Okinawa, Japan.

After completing his military service, John returned to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office in the summer of 1969, where he continued his career until retiring in 2001 with the rank of Captain. John's career with the Sheriff's Office was marked by deep involvement across many facets of the department. He held numerous leadership roles throughout his tenure, including serving as Head of the Sheriff's SWAT Team, and was widely known for his integrity, decisiveness, and steady presence. John led with quiet confidence, earned the trust of those around him, and was respected for his unwavering commitment to doing what was right. Known for remaining calm and composed under pressure, he was a trusted leader whose influence extended far beyond his rank.

Following his retirement from the Sheriff's Office, John continued his commitment to public service as Chief of Security at the College of San Mateo from 2001 to 2012 where his professionalism and experience were highly valued.

John attended Sequoia High School and, following his Army service, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from San Jose State University.

Outside of his professional life, John embraced life with humor, curiosity, and warmth. He was an award-winning marksman, an avid firearms enthusiast, and a skilled reloader. In retirement, he especially loved exploring the coast and mountains of California. He enjoyed discovering foods and cuisines from different cultures and was always eager to share a meal, a story, and a laugh.

John was incredibly funny and kind. He loved animals and had a natural way of making people feel comfortable and welcome. Above all, he loved his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather, and a loyal friend to all who knew him.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Maryln; his sons, Robert Wells (Ashley Maciel) and Joseph Wells (Kerry Wells née Zelmon); and his grandchildren, Jackson Wells and Emma Wells.

John will be remembered for his integrity, sharp wit, and deep love for his family and community. His legacy of service, leadership, kindness, and laughter will live on in all who had the privilege of knowing him.

John will be laid to rest at Alta Mesa Cemetery in Palo Alto, California, in a private burial. A Celebration of Life will be held on January 31 at 2:00 PM at the family's home.
