James
Warren
November 29, 1929 – May 22, 2026
James (Jim) Douglas Warren, age 96, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026 in Woodside, CA, surrounded by loving family and friends.
He was born on Nov 29, 1929 to James Monroe Warren and Grace Kemper Warren in Mill Valley, CA.
Jim grew up in San Francisco with his four brothers (Dave, Bud, Tom, and John). At age 16 he graduated from Galileo High School and later attended UC Berkeley under the Naval ROTC program. He served as Captain on a destroyer during the Korean War.
Jim was also an accomplished gymnast. His gymnastics career was sparked in elementary school when a visiting gymnastics instructor asked if anyone knew gymnastics. Jim proudly showed off his forward roll, and thus his gymnastics career was born. He ended up competing for UC Berkeley and earning the title of Northern California AAU Men's All-Around Champion in both 1948 and 1956.
A devoted husband to Pat for nearly 50 years and both a father and friend to his children, Jim's legacy extends beyond his family to all those he touched with his kindness and generosity.
Jim had a big heart and was prone to an easy tear. His love of poetry ran deep, and he would often spontaneously recite obscure stanzas to frame a moment. Off-color limericks were not outside his repertoire, usually concluded with an engaging, puckish grin.
Jim brought warmth, humor and humility to his rich and storied life.
He is survived by his wife, Pat, his children, Peter Warren (Emily) of Ashland, OR, Mark Callaway (Ansley) of Atlanta, GA, and his grandchildren, Jasper and Anderson.
Large was his bounty, and his soul sincere,
Heav'n did a recompense as largely send:
He gave to Mis'ry all he had, a tear,
He gain'd from Heav'n ('twas all he wish'd) a friend.
