Obituary

Howard Joseph (Joe) Biddle, 87, of Redwood City, CA passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on July 27, 2021. Joe was born in McAlester, Oklahoma on October 16, 1933, to Robert and Elsie Biddle. The family moved to Redwood City, CA in April 1939. Joe attended Sequoia High School where he met his high school sweetheart, Virginia Davies. He graduated Sequoia in 1951, Joe and Virginia wed June, 13 1953, and were happily married for 68 years.

Joe enlisted in the Air Force after graduating high school, and served for four years as an Aircraft Mechanic during the Korean War.
In 1960, Joe graduated from San Jose State, 3rd in his class, with a Bachelor Degree in Accounting and Industrial Management. He worked for Ampex for three years before taking over management of Davies Appliance in 1963 from his father-in-law Al Davies. Joe and Virginia later purchased Davies Appliance Store, and continued to own it throughout his life.

Joe was an avid sports fan. He liked the San Francisco 49ers and Giants, and enjoyed a good Sharks game, too. He especially loved Indy Car racing - from 1986 to 1996 he visited every racetrack in the United States, and attended every race, continuing to follow the sport on TV throughout his life. But, most importantly, he loved watching his family play sports - he was often seen cheering from the stands for his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids at their baseball, soccer and gymnastics events.

Joe loved to travel the world. He and Virginia visited many amazing places throughout his life, sometimes at amazing times in history. He traveled to Germany shortly after the Berlin Wall fell, and Russia in the 90s. He traveled to Africa on Safari, saw the Pyramids in Egypt, and visited Jerusalem on Easter. He loved a good cruise, a favorite being a three week trip through Scandinavia. He even cruised through the Arctic Circle, and around the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn. He loved learning about other lands, and was proud to have visited every continent, except Antarctica.

When Joe wasn't traveling, every Wednesday night you could find him at the Redwood City Elks Lodge #1991. He loved being an active member and made lifelong Elks friends. He was also a member of the Exchange Club.  Joe was a scholar at heart, he had a photographic memory, and was always ready to share some interesting fact, tale or event he had recently learned about. He often would browse Barnes and Noble and send his family books he thought they would enjoy.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. He is survived by his wife Virginia; his children: Lynda (Dan) Gehm, Kathy (Arnie) Lowenstein and Bill (Julie) Biddle; grandchildren: Susan (Jay) Ross, Danny (Katrina) Gehm, Chris (Kelsey) Chambers, Jeff Chambers, Samantha Biddle, and Katie Biddle; and great grandchildren: Kiley Ross, Jackson Ross, Morgan Ross, Laney Chambers, Leanna Chambers, Colten Chambers, Hailey Gehm, and Hannah Gehm; and his brother Robert Biddle.
