Edward D. Lopez

Edward David Lopez, 82, of Lincoln, California, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Ed was born and raised in San Francisco’s Mission District, the son of Art and Gloria Lopez. He attended St. Charles Elementary School and later graduated from Sequoia High School in 1962, where he played water polo. The eldest of 13 siblings, family was an important part of Ed’s life from the very beginning.

In 1968, Ed married the love of his life, Irma Maldonado, at St. Pius Catholic Church. Together, they shared more than 58 years of marriage and raised three children: their late son, Eddy Lopez, and their daughters, Michelle Mendez and Andrea Angulo.

Ed was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren: Gabriel, Alex, Matthaus, Sophia, Cameron, Enzo, Cristiano, and Emma. He was also blessed to meet his great-grandson, Daniel Edward, who carries his name.

Ed proudly served his country during the Vietnam era from 1965 to 1967. For his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal.

After returning home from Vietnam, Ed worked at Raychem as a wire and cable technician while also pursuing his goal of becoming a police officer. After graduating from the police academy, he began his law enforcement career with the Redwood City Police Department, where he served for two years. He then joined the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, dedicating more than 25 years to serving his community before retiring.

Ed was known for his strong personality, hardworking nature, and the care and loyalty he showed both personally and professionally. He enjoyed playing softball with family and friends, and after retirement, he developed a love for golf.

Ed was also deeply involved in his community and faith. He was a longtime member of the Redwood City Elks Lodge and St. Pius Men’s Club. He was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, where he achieved the distinguished rank of Fourth Degree.

A lifelong Bay Area sports fan, Ed faithfully cheered on the San Francisco Giants and San Francisco 49ers. He loved to travel and visited many wonderful places throughout his life, but Hawaii always held a special place in his heart.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Gloria Lopez; his son, Eddy Lopez; and his siblings Gary, Fred, Richard, Sylvia, Carol, and Bobby. He is survived by his beloved wife, Irma; his daughters, Michelle and Andrea; his siblings Art Jr., Ron, Linda, Gregory, Denise, and Dennis; his eight grandchildren; his great-grandson, Daniel Edward; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Ed lived a full life centered around family, faith, loyalty, hard work, and service to others. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, friend, veteran, and law enforcement officer. His strong presence, the stories he shared, and most of all, his love for his family will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
