Obituary

Surrounded by the love of his family, In Kil Hwang passed away peacefully on July 24, 2026, at the age of 86. He leaves behind a legacy not only of academic and professional excellence, but of kindness, humility, generosity, and a life joyfully lived.Born in Seoul, South Korea, on January 1, 1940, In Kil was the seventh of eight brothers. Even as a young boy, he was known for quietly sitting at a small desk, always reading or writing. Bright and intellectually gifted, he consistently ranked at the top of his class, yet he naturally gravitated toward supporting others rather than seeking the spotlight, reflecting his humility. Growing up during the hardships of the Korean War shaped his resilience and his appreciation for life's simple joys. His academic journey led him to Seoul National University, where he graduated top of his class from the Department of Physics. In 1965, after passing the competitive government examination to study abroad, he traveled to the United States to pursue his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Wyoming, completing his doctorate degree in three years. His greatest adventure, however, had begun several years earlier. In 1960, shortly after entering college, a group of nine young men from Seoul National University arranged to meet a group of six young women from Ewha Womans University over tea. Among them was a young woman named Myung Hee, who would become the love of his life. After moving to the United States, In Kil would write a letter to Myung Hee’s father, asking for permission to allow Myung Hee to join him in the United States. She arrived in Wyoming on October 24, 1967. Just days later, on November 4, they were married, beginning a loving marriage that would span nearly six decades. In Kil began his academic career as a physics professor in Colorado, teaching for nearly two decades. While on sabbatical in Korea to conduct solar energy research, In Kil was tapped for an opportunity in the emerging semiconductor industry. He joined Anam Semiconductor (now Amkor Technology) as an executive, eventually serving as President and later Vice Chairman during a period of tremendous growth. His colleagues admired him not simply for his expertise, but for his leadership skills and his values that were especially unique during that period in Korea. He believed in fairness over hierarchy, integrity over status, and generosity over personal gain. He cared deeply for the employees, even going as far as setting up a program to pay for employee childrens’ college tuition and encouraging employees to learn golf to enjoy healthier, fuller lives. Those who worked with him remember him as approachable, caring, honest, and deeply respectful of everyone, regardless of level or position.Together, In Kil and Myung Hee raised three children—one son and two daughters. As a father, he offered unwavering support. His advice was simple: “Do your best.” “Trust yourself.”He never measured success by wealth, status, or recognition. Instead, he wanted his children to build lives that made them genuinely happy. His greatest joy later became his six grandchildren—four grandsons and two granddaughters. He delighted in keeping up with popular culture so he could connect with each of them, always finding common ground regardless of age. Some of the family's happiest memories were made together during annual Thanksgiving gatherings in San Francisco, vacations in Cabo San Lucas and Hawaii, and an unforgettable journey throughout Korea. Traveling en masse as a group of 14, In Kil was often stopped by others: “You have a beautiful family. You are a lucky man.”Outside of family, golf became one of his life's great passions. In Kil played four or five times a week until the age of 86, accomplishing what many golfers only dream of: shooting his age and recording four hole-in-ones. He played many of the top 100 courses including St. Andrews, Turnberry, Pebble Beach, Bandon Dunes, and Cypress Point. He earned the nickname "Big Daddy" after a caddie at Bandon Dunes witnessed him outplaying and outwinning golfers decades younger. Anyone who knew In Kil remembers his remarkable sense of humor. His wit was quick, clever, and perfectly timed. He loved making others laugh. Whether over a round of golf, a bottle of good wine, an opera performance, or a family dinner, he made every gathering more enjoyable simply by being there.Perhaps no description captured him better than the affectionate nickname given to him by friends: "Buddha’s Center" (부처님 가운데 토막) - known for his quiet, reliable presence that brought peace to those around him. In Kil had the rare gift of making everyone feel comfortable, valued, and welcome. His legacy lives on, not only through the family he loved so deeply, but through the countless lives he touched with kindness, humility, generosity, and grace. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Myung Hee; his three children (and their spouses) Joo Ha (SuJeong), Lena (Robert), Irene (Joe); and his six cherished grandchildren Toby, Sarah, Miles, Riley, Elliot, and Christie. If In Kil hoped to leave future generations with one lesson, it would likely be to enjoy your life while you’re living it and spend time with the people you love. His family will remember him for how he made people feel - welcome, joyful, peaceful and loved. In Kil’s is a legacy of a life truly well lived. A celebration of life service will be held in Murrieta, California in late October. Details will be shared later.
