Obituary

Dennis John Durkin, 76, passed away on June 25, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family after living with metastatic prostate cancer.

Born in Wisconsin to Robert and Glennis Durkin, Dennis was the eldest of seven children and grew up in a lively household. He deeply valued the bonds he shared with his parents and siblings, especially the humor, loyalty, and support that became such an important part of his life.

Dennis built a long and meaningful career in law, first as an attorney and later as a judge. Much of his work centered on family law, where he brought patience, fairness, and compassion to people going through difficult times. He continued working for as long as he was able and took pride in listening to people, helping them resolve what could be resolved, and helping them move forward.

Faith and service were central to Dennis’s life. He was a longtime member of St. Pius Church, where he served for decades as a lector and Eucharistic minister. He also gave generously of his time through the Men’s Club, Lions Club, Rotary, and other community organizations. He was always willing to help friends and family when they needed him, and one of the lessons he hoped to pass on was simple: do the right thing, whether or not anyone thanks you.

Dennis loved being outdoors and was always drawn to adventure, from backpacking, camping, and skiing to scuba and abalone diving, sailing, running, and biking. As an instrument-rated pilot, flying became one of his great passions, and one he shared with his father on many memorable trips together. He especially loved Tahoe, Drakesbad, Giants baseball, and the family traditions tied to summer vacations and winter trips.

Dennis showed his love by showing up. He arranged his work life so he could be there for soccer games, track meets, volleyball matches, school events, and the ordinary moments that became treasured memories. His children never had to wonder whether he would be there. He always was.

His children will remember his hugs, his wisdom, his moral compass, his dedication, car rides filled with music, fantasy stories with wizards and dragons, and the comfort of knowing they could always count on him.

As Bapa, Dennis brought that same devotion to a new generation. His grandchildren will remember school pickups, gummy bears on car rides, sleepovers at Grandma and Bapa’s, and how loved he made them feel.

And everyone will remember his signature black cowboy hat.

Dennis is survived by his beloved wife, Stephanie; his children, Melissa, Dennis, and Lisa; his grandchildren, Alex, Kylie, Ash, Cayson, Bryson, and Terrence; and his siblings, Susan, Timothy, Nancy, Mary, Patricia, and Robert. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, July 6, at 5:00 p.m. at St. Pius Church, followed by an Irish wake at Homer Crouse Hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mission House in Redwood City: https://www.missionhospice.org/services/mission-house/

Dennis will be deeply missed and always loved.
