Carmen Alicia
Madrid
January 25, 1927 – February 28, 2025
Carmen Alicia Madrid, age 98, passed away on February 28, 2025, surrounded by family, in Foster City, California. Carmen was born on January 25th, 1927, in El Cerrito, California. She was the third of five beautiful daughters born to Simón and Enriqueta Delgado. Carmen's family immigrated to California seeking a safe haven amidst the political tumult caused by the Mexican Revolution at the dawn of the 20th century. They created a home in the East Bay until tragedy struck when their patriarch, Simón died in an industrial accident. During the Great Depression, the family endured years of uncertainty and insecurity. Later, Enriqueta remarried, and Carmen's family gained a stepfather and a beloved brother.
Carmen graduated from El Cerrito High School in 1945, at the close of WWII. She worked at Remmington Rand in San Francisco, where she met the love of her life, Joseph Madrid. They married on June 18th, 1949, and settled in the Bay Area. Over the following years, they welcomed four children: Mark, Elisa, Peter and Lauren. Carmen loved her role as a devoted wife and mother. She filled her days with the domestic arts of cooking, baking, and sewing. In her free time, Carmen loved to read the newspaper, cover to cover, and always enjoyed a good book - mostly historical biographies.
When her children were grown, she spent a quiet life with Joe in Foster City, California. They continued to be devoted to family, celebrating many milestones, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Carmen was especially delighted to see her extended family and looked forward to annual picnics, masses, and special visits with her siblings, and her cousins, nephews and nieces. She adored her family and was uplifted by them. In Carmen's later years, she was welcomed to share the home of her daughter Elisa and husband Keith who were committed to making her final years peaceful and happy.
Carmen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe Madrid, as well as her sisters, Esther, Mary, Jessie, and Velia and brother, Kit. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Mark and Nena Madrid; Elisa and Keith Rice; Peter Madrid; Lauren Madrid and Sean Laughney. She will be missed by her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Heather, Jennifer (Sal), Ryan (Meghan), Joey, Caitlin, and Colin (Mike), Sara, Mason and Ethan. Her extended family of cousins, nephews and nieces will feel the loss of this beloved elder member.
